APS Announces Free Email Alerting Service

The American Physical Society (APS) announced today that it will offer free table of contents (TOC) notification service for each Journal published by APS: Physical Review, Physical Review Letters, and Reviews of Modern Physics to subscribers and non-subscribers. The TOC notification service will provide users of the APS journals with email alerts of recently published issues.

Researchers can now sign up for free Email Alerts, with table of contents listing for each new journal issue. Alerts are sent immediately to the user's email after the complete issue is published online. Users may choose between ASCII and HTML formats for the alerts. Alerts in ASCII format contain the URL for the journal issue and a list of all articles in the issue. HTML alerts are fully hyperlinked to abstracts and full-text for each article. Journal subscribers will be able to seamlessly link to and access full-text content from the HTML TOCs and non-subscribers may purchase full-text articles using online ordering services.

Signing up is easy and secure - just go to the Email Alerts Center http://ojps.aip.org/jhtml/APS/alert.jsp or at the APS Journal Homepage: http://publish.aps.org/ or from the individual journal homepages, enter your name and email address, and select which format you want to receive your alerts (either HTML or ASCII format).

SIRTF Renamed

From STSI:
It was announced today that the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (always too much of a mouthful!) has been renamed the Spitzer Space Telescope, in honor of Lyman Spitzer, the accepted "father" of space astronomy. The first images from this exciting infrared telescope were released at a press conference today and are available at http://www.spitzer.caltech.edu/

NRAO 2004 Summer Student Program

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is now accepting
applications for its 2004 Summer Student program. The NRAO has
programs for undergraduate, graduating seniors, and graduate students
with backgrounds in the physical sciences, math, computing, or
engineering. It is partially supported by the National Science
Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) program, but
is supplemented by NRAO to include positions for students who
do not meet the REU guidelines, such as graduating seniors, some
foreign students, and projects of an engineering or computer
programming nature.

NRAO summer students conduct research under the supervision of an NRAO
staff member at one of three NRAO sites: Socorro, NM; Green Bank, WV;
and Charlottesville, VA. The project may involve any aspect of
astronomy, including original research, instrumentation, telescope
design, astronomical site evaluation, or astronomical software
development. Students collaborate on their own observational projects
using NRAO telescopes, and may qualify for partial financial support
to attend the January 2005 AAS meeting. Appointments are from 10-12
weeks in duration, with start dates of Monday May 24th, Tuesday June
1st, or Monday June 7th 2004. The stipends for the 2004 Summer
Student Program are $445 per week for undergraduates and $480 per week
for graduated seniors and graduate students. These stipends include
an allowance for housing.

More information on this program is available at:
http://www.nrao.edu/students/summer-students.shtml

Applications should be submitted on-line, and may be accessed from the above
website. Applications are due on January 26, 2004.
