Online Journal Access Changed

Please direct inquiries to IfA library staff.

The main campus has changed the way online journals are accessed. You will now have to login to access journals online unless you are physically in Hamilton or Sinclair libraries.

The login can either be:
1. your Manoa ID card number and last name {the old "off-campus" login}

OR

2. your email name (before the @) and password.

You can test your ability to login here: https://micro189.lib3.hawaii.edu/ezproxy/patsearch.php

The good news is that you remain logged in as long as your browser is open.

Please note the warning on the bottom of the validation screen:

ATTENTION Internet Explorer and Netscape 6.x Users: you must have cookies ENABLED in your browser's privacy/security preferences in order to connect to remote databases from non-UH Manoa IP addresses. If you have difficulty logging in, please check your security settings and try again. If you are using these browsers with Windows XP, you may still encounter problems. Therefore, until these software products are fully compatible, we strongly recommend using a different browser such as OPERA (http://www.opera.com/download) or an older browser version such as IE 5.x or Netscape 4.x.

UH Press Release
Honolulu Advertiser story

Congratulations Dr. Herbig!

It is our pleasure to announce that the March 6 batch of Minor Planet Circulars contains the citation for a new asteroid name that honors our own George Herbig. (11754) Herbig was previously known by its designation 2560 P-L, given to objects found in 1960 during the course of the Palomar-Leiden Survey. The citation:

Discovered 1960 Sept. 24 by C. J. van Houten and I. van Houten-Groeneveld on Palomar Schmidt plates taken by T. Gehrels. U.S. astronomer George Herbig (b. 1920), co-discoverer of Herbig-Haro objects, is a spectroscopist who has investigated young stars, star formation and the interstellar medium. At the Lick Observatory from 1948 to 1988, he now works at the University of Hawaii.

National Security and Scientific Exchange

"Since 9/11 a number of changes have taken place that could have an impact on scientific meetings and conferences, student programs, and normal peer-to-peer interactions....participation in scientific conferences in the U.S. could entail additional steps that may become more than an inconvenience, but a substantial barrier."

In an attempt to assess the impact of National Security Policies on collaboration and scientific exchange in astronomy, the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) is gathering data on experiences.

Low Impact Factors Explained

The reason for the drop in rank for A&A and ApJ comes from an error in the procedure used to count the number of citations to the papers published in these two journals.

The paper by A. Heck, "WRONG IMPACT!", published in the EAS Newsletter, Issue 26, December 2003, explains what happened.

Short Synopsis:
It seems that in the late 1990s when ISI started to use shorter abbreviations for some major journals, they continued to count references to the long names for A&A and ApJ, but not the new shorter versions.
