ORCID

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID)  orcid.org
is a registry of unique researcher identifiers

It provides the disambiguation of personal names long needed in research tracking. It supports more accurate publication metrics. And will be welcomed by selection and promotion & tenure committees trying to access candidates' records.

The over 23 developer/partners organizations include
California Institute of Technology and MIT.  It's international: CERN and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) are partners.

Both the American Astronomical Society (AAS) and the American Physical Society (APS) are in the developers group.  Among publishers Elsevier, Nature (NPG), Springer and Wiley are members.
